Not All Ideas For Chocolate Are Good

Canadian chocolate bar make Botticelli spent nearly two years patenting a process that enables them to add Omega-3 rich fish oils to chocolate. “It’s a great way for consumers to get the benefits of fish oil without the “burp back factor” of standard supplements, said Sam MacDonald, vice president of sales.” Am I the only one who thinks that this is a bad idea?

There’s been a lot in the news lately about research into the health benefits of cacao—all of it good. While cocoa (and chocolate) can be an enjoyable and important part of a healthy diet, I think the industry should re-think the trend of turning chocolate into a vitamin supplement.

If you want to eat chocolate, eat chocolate. If you want to consume fish oil, eat fish. If you want to take an Omega-3 supplement but don’t want the “burp back factor” maybe you might want to take chocolate-flavored fish-oil bars. But fish-oil enhanced chocolate? It’s not going on my shopping list.

  1. That is, without a doubt, one of the most unsettling ideas for chocolate I have ever heard.  What’s next, Chocolate broccoli?  Chocolate liver?  Please, LEAVE CHOCOLATE ALONE!!!!!!!
I’d also like to know what sparked this idea.  Sometimes combinations of foodstuffs are good ideas. This one just sounds gross.  Where did this idea come from?

  2. I am not sure where the idea originally came from but the current interest in “chocolate as a health food” is certainly sparking a lot of product development looking for ways to use chocolate to make some foods more palatable.

I do happen to know a way to use chocolate with broccoli, think a Chinese-style Hoisin sauce made with cocoa. Tell your kids it’s Chinese Chocolate Sauce and they’ll eat their veggies! (It actually worked with my kids.)

  3. There’s actually a company out there that has figured out how to bypass the fish altogether and use the plant extract from the plants the fish actually eat to become high in Omega fatty acids.  Results are a tasty orange chocolate bar with the crisp of tiny flax seed.  Fish oil in chocolate??? Now that’s just gross.
