Quick Bite: El Rey Icoa

Let’s face it. Most white chocolates deserve their really bad reputation for the single reason that they have no flavor. But not this one. Read on to find out why.

Type(s): Eating Chocolate, Baking Chocolate, Kosher
Taste Rating: Extraordinary
Overall Value Rating: Superior

The reason most white chocolates have no flavor is that they are made from cocoa butter which has had all the flavor (technically, the volatile aromatics) removed though a process called deodorization. Not so with El Rey Icoa, the only white chocolate made with undeodorized cocoa butter. And, because there are no cocoa solids (which is why it’s white), it’s buttery smooth. Icoa has the flavor of a very good mild milk chocolate. Even if you think you don’t like white chocolate you owe it to yourself to try this at least once.

  1. I’ll add it to my wish list.  I KNEW white chocolate had to naturally taste better than the stuff I’ve sampled that tastes almost entirely of sugar. I thought it was because they added so much sugar. Thank you for telling me why.
I can hardly wait to taste it.
Thank you, this gives me hope.

  2. Icoa isn’t sweet either. Most white chocolate is sickening sweet, and Icoa doesn’t bear any of that cloying sweetness that all others do. Also, a lot of white chocolate I’ve tried has a sour aftertaste, which Icoa lacks.
