Source for Suchard Rochers in the US.

A Reader Writes, “I pray that you can help me. I lived in Paris for 2 years, in the 1970’s. Since my return to the U.S., I have had recurring dreams about trying to find a patisserie in America where I can buy Le Rocher Suchard. In my dream, I can see the chocolate wrapped in the shiny red tinfoil, far away in a store window, but when I approach the store the chocolate disappears. I search and search, but cannot find the elusive Rocher Suchard (both au lait and chocolat noir). I have had this dream for 20+ years and the only time it has stopped is when i managed to get a friend traveling to France, to bring some back. This is driving me crazy - does anyone know of a source on the internet for buying Le Rocher Suchard? I don’t think I will sleep soundly until I find a source. I cannot afford the airfare to go to France directly, every time these dreams occur, thus setting up the obsession once again. I would be eternally grateful.” A very interesting dream, I wish I knew more about dream interpretation to understand if there is more here than meets the eye. I was, however, able to find a source for you ...

... Rocher is the French word for ‘rock’ which is what these little delectable look like. The best known rocher is the one made by Ferrero, is lighter in texture than most other rochers, and is available just about everywhere.

Suchard Rochers on the other hand are much scarcer. The source I was able to locate is French Feast, and the direct link to the page is http://www.frenchfeast.com/products.htm#chocolate. It looks like they won’t be available again until it cools off later in September.

  2. Jocelyn:: It was my pleasure to help. Please let all of us know if the rochers you get through French Feast match up to your dreams and if the service meets your expectations. I can then add them to the list of sources on The New World Chocolate Society site. ::Clay

  3. Dear Clay Gordon, I read the correspondence you had with Jocelyn conmcerning the Rocher Suchard. I have ordered from them before and just now waiting for the end of September to stock up. They are the real thing both in dark and milk chocolate. I grew up in France and remember going to the boulangerie to buy bread as a young boy and cheating a few Francs out of my mother so that I could from time to time buy a Rocher. They are out of this world!!

  4. Clay: I did indeed order les Rochers Suchard - both au lait and noire. They arrived fresh and very quickly from "French Feast". They are as exquisite as I remember. Who says dreams don't come true? merci mille fois, Jocelyn

  6. I have also ordered Le Rocher Suchard from French Feast and have had great service. Another location to buy these items is from an Ebay store called The Frenchy Bee.

  7. Julie: Thanks for adding your experience. I visited The Frenchy Bee site while I was doing my research and they were not mentioned there at that time. They are now (10/12/04 -- http://stores.ebay.com/The-Frenchy-Bee) but only milk and they appear to be in limited supply, but that may be just the way eBay is being used. BTW, I have to ask ... any relation? ::Clay

  8. Are you familiar with a specialty in the French Alps (Haute Savoie) called "Glacons"? They are round hazlenut-praline chocolates coated in a confiserie sugar and literally melt in your mouth-only to be found in Megeve, Sallanches, Combloux as aarea specialty-and of course unable to find these anywhere -I wrote to French Freast to see if they would consider importing these as well-They are "to die for". Just like the Suchard -Rochers (by the way, The Suchard-Rochers were bought by Kraft France and they unfortunately have expanded to other flavors such as Caramel and Nougat which as a large conglomerate now, takes away from the special milk and chocolat noire flavors that were known to be the trademark of Suchard Rochers.) In France, you can find Suchard-Rochers, Creme de Marrons and even Calissons easily in the supermarkets.why they haven't taken here is beyond me-Thankfully I can find creme de marrons and Calissons in specialty stores in Boston but very expensive. Thanks for your input.

  9. Cheryl :: I am not familiar with Glacons but they sound wonderful. The last (and first) time I was in Megeve was in 1986 before I got interested in chocolate. Why aren't they available here? That's a very good question that I can't answer. There are companies that specialize in importing and distributing Belgian chocolates - many different brands - but few companies that specialize in French chocolates that bring over one or two brands but not more than that. Confections are so perishable that perhaps it's not worth the risk, especially for an item that is not well known. Thanks for letting me know about these I will ask around.

  11. Speaking of rochers, does anyone know of "Reve Noirs"? I think they are (were) made by Lanvin. They were my favorite when I lived in France in the early Eighties.

  13. I went to school in Neuchatel and there was a Suchard chocolate factory right down the street from where we lived. There was one particular chocolate bar that I am wanting to find. It was plain milk chocolate, a large bar and on the outside of the packaging there was a red rose and black and white checks or squares. It was the best chocolate I have ever had in my life, to date. Now I see that Suchard has been bought out by Kraft, and saw one kind of chocolate bar offered for sale. Is the rest of the chocolate bar line from Suchard, history, sort of speak?

  15. Funny, I've also dreamt about these chocolates... my father used to take business trips to Europe when I was a kid, and bring these back. I never knew what they were called, just that they were the best chocolate treat I'd ever had. Well, 20 years later, my dad was in Europe and I mentioned it to him... he just brought some back, and I'm thrilled to know what they are and find a place to get them here!

  16. When I was a little girl, about 75 years ago, my parents and I would go each Sunday to visit my grandparents - by ferry, from Rowe's Wharf in Boston to Winthrop, across the bay. While waiting for the ferry to leave, my father would give me a penny to buy a Suchard chocolate square from a vending machine on a post at the dock. It was a very dark chocolate, and I've never forgotten the delicious taste! Thanks for giving some sources for me to check out!

  17. I was so happy to find someone like me. I LOVE the Suchard le rocher chocolate. I lived in Paris when I was a child. After that I just came back a couple of times, but this is the best chocolate in the world. When I saw some people with the same problem as me (I can not find suchard in Brazil), it was good, because I am not the only crazy, hehe. I tried in the site that you gave (frecnh feast) but they do not send to Brazil. Do you have any tip for me? Thank you very much!
    :: Lilian
I am sorry, I do not know any importers of French goods in Brazil.

Your best bet is to use the Internet to locate a Suchard office in
South America and contact them to see if anyone is importing them
    locally.

As I am not fluent (in Portuguese) or fluent enough in Spanish, I am
not in a position to do this research for you.
